Is this some kind of joke?

Those of you that know me know I am no fashionista. I've said it before and I'll say it again - I would wear jeans, a black t-shirt and flip flops every day of my life if I could. So I find it comical that my daughter is not only the exact opposite with regards to fashion, she is also ADAMANT about her opinions about these fashions. Let me run down a few examples we've had in the past few weeks:

We've had to resort to a calendar system, which determines whether she gets to wear a dress or is forced by her cruel mother to wear pants (the horror). As most of you probably saw on FB, last week when it was that dreaded day I was told "Mom, you are RUINING my life." This is in part to the Barbie movie from whence she got the line, but I believe the sentiment would've come out even if she didn't have Barbie's sassy words to use.

She is in LOVE with her flip flops (I guess we're not that different after all). Since it has now gotten a bit too chilly to wear them, I've had to hide them because it is a fight pretty much every day. In her despair over her loss, she has turned to the comfort of one pair of brown dress shoes. Dress shoes that were meant to be worn with cute little tights and a skirt. Instead, she REFUSES to wear tights at all and wants to wear these shoes all the time with no socks or barrier at all for her poor little foot. The first time she wore them to school, the teachers told me she was hurting all day in them (mom of the year award). When I got to school to pick her up, I noticed they were on the wrong feet (probably b/c she had been taking them off and on all day b/c they hurt so bad) and told her she was a gooser. I would've thought this would have been deterrent enough to either have her choose a different pair of shoes or break down and wear socks. But oh no, she does not give up that easily. The next day she requested to wear them and I reminded her how badly they hurt her feet. To which she replied "Mommy, it's because I had them on the wrong feet gooser!" So I made her wear them with socks (only after having her walk into school barefoot in the cold rain since she refused to put on the socks). And then again this week she refused to wear socks, saying, I kid you not "I would rather have my feet hurt than wear socks with those shoes." OMG. What have I gotten myself into?

Finally, and most upsetting to me, is that I really do pick out some cute stuff for her to wear and she REFUSES to wear it as intended. Tights - no go. Cute skirt and shirt outfits - trash. Comfy track suits - dumb. Suggest she wear a sweater over her outfit because it's cold? Be prepared for a major meltdown. Not even dresses are safe, there are some that are not good enough for your highness. Given her choice, she would wear one of 3 or 4 dresses over and over again. So I guess she does get it honestly, we just have different opinions about what is acceptable to wear over and over again. So please don't judge if you see my little girl wearing a sundress with a completely clashing long sleeve t-shirt underneath. These days I've learned you must pick your battles, and this is one I can't fight every day. I just keep reminding myself that I am thankful I have a little girl who knows what she likes, and isn't afraid to fight for it.

I have decided that this is simply one example of God's hilarious sense of humor that he sometimes uses as a mirror in which we can see ourselves in reverse. It is irritating, I know. It is also something she will grow out of, we hope. Love you blog.

Oh man. I had no idea it was that bad. Already at 3 she is sacrificing her feet for cute shoes? That's much too early. I can't believe she told you that she'd rather have her feet hurt all day than wear socks with those shoes. I mean, how does she even know what's dorky and what isn't? She's 3!!! I guess she just makes it up herself. This is very worrisome.

I feel your pain and will never judge. I confess to many battles with a 2yo in attempts to get her to wear a cute ensemble but she ALWAYS wins. Jim constantly reminds me that she's 2 and no one cares what she wears but I can't help but feel like people look at her mismatched clothes and wonder what goes through MY head. Gotta love 'em! I don't think anyone will ever push our K's around.

I feel your pain. You must start taking her shopping with you now - it's the only way I could get S to wear stuff - b/c she picked it herself (Carter's store is a jackpot for us right now - she loves dresses w/ leggings - but she loves tights too). I would do the same with shoes - take her to the shoe store - and pick out like a handful of acceptable options and let her choose from those.

It's made a world of difference to give her 'control' (based off of what is acceptable to me) of what she wears. I agree - the battle is NOT worth it.

Good luck!

Oh, how I feel your pain! It started at four with Makenzie, and TWO with Ashlyn. Makenzie would wear shorts and the SAME soccer shirt just about every day this summer if I hadn't finally hid it in one of her drawers. I agree, it is definitely not worth the battle. Just think, this is one area in which you can save some money for now. At some point, Kaitlin will probably want all of those cute clothes you buy and you'll have plenty of $$ saved for them!!
